Small Acts, Stronger Communities: Sanctuary in Action Across Wandsworth

Across Wandsworth, sanctuary is being built every day through simple but powerful acts of welcome. From libraries and churches to arts spaces, local organisations continue to create environments where people seeking sanctuary feel seen, supported, and part of the community.
At Balham Library, weekly English conversation sessions offer a relaxed space for people to practise spoken English, build confidence, and form meaningful connections. These informal gatherings highlight the vital role libraries can play as welcoming community hubs.

Creativity has also been a powerful tool for connection this month. At Battersea Arts Centre, Messages from the HeART, an exhibition by local social enterprise Hope in the Heart, shared stories shaped by displacement, resilience, and hope. Through art and poetry, the exhibition created space for reflection, dialogue, and understanding.
February also marked an important milestone in Tooting, where All Saints Church formally signed the City of Sanctuary pledge and began its journey to become a Church of Sanctuary. Following a collective decision by the congregation, members added their names and messages of welcome to a shared scroll, a visible commitment to hospitality and inclusion.
The church has already hosted Arts for Sanctuary events featuring music, film, and storytelling by local asylum-seeking and international artists, with plans to continue this work throughout the year.
These actions may seem small, but together they help build a borough where sanctuary is lived out in everyday spaces, strengthening community ties and fostering belonging for everyone.
