July 2022, Wandsworth Council pledged to become a Borough of Sanctuary and in June 2023, the Council published the Wandsworth Sanctuary Strategy. The three-year Strategy was created in collaboration with refugees, asylum seekers and local groups, and outlines an approach that is welcoming, universal, clear, collaborative and accessible.

All libraries in the Borough are working towards becoming accredited libraries of sanctuary. These community spaces already offer use of computers and access to Wi-Fi, newspapers from around the world, children’s study centres, story times, ESOL classes and space for informal chats that are as important for advancing English as formal classes. Wandsworth libraries are now working to ensure refugees have good access to and use of their space.

Tara Theatre was awarded Theatre of Sanctuary status in June 2023, in recognition of their long standing work alongside refugees and communities seeking sanctuary in London. This acknowledgement highlights Tara Theatre’s commitment to using theatre, artistry, and creativity to reach across social, cultural, and geo-political divides.

Oxfam Tooting became the first shop of Sanctuary in Wandsworth in December 2022. Oxfam Tooting provides extensive training to all staff on issues relevant to refugees, including abuse, mental health, trauma, diversity and inclusion. It also offers work experience to volunteers, many of whom are from a refugee or migrant background.

The Home Community Café in Earlsfield was awarded café of Sanctuary status in March 2022 in recognition of their amazing work creating a safe and welcoming space for refugees and asylum seekers. Their sanctuary status stands testament to the inspiring work of Meg and everyone at the café, not only in their efforts to support displaced people who have been resettled locally, but also in the success of the café in encouraging friendships across our community.
