Building a sanctuary in Wandsworth

Refugees and asylum seekers are forced to flee their homes and make the perilous journey to the UK. If they make it here, they face a hostile welcome - poor living conditions, isolation and discrimination.

City of Sanctuary UK holds the vision that the UK will be a welcoming place of safety for all and proud to offer sanctuary to people fleeing violence and persecution.

We're looking at how we can build sanctuaries and create unity in a time of divisive rhetoric. We'd like to hear from experts by experience and local refugee organisations about what’s worked well in other areas and what we can learn from this.

You may be part of a local business, organisation or an individual who would like to hear more and contribute to the conversation.

Find out more about how you can take part on our news page.

We support the principles of City of Sanctuary.

City of Sanctuary holds the vision that our nations will be welcoming places of safety for all and proud to offer sanctuary to people fleeing violence and persecution.

As well as being a movement in their own right, City of Sanctuary also contributes towards wider movement building through partnership work and supporting advocacy and campaigning initiatives. City of Sanctuary UK enjoys close partnerships with all the major refugee organisations and are committed to working with them to build a united voice to advocate for people seeking sanctuary in our nations and worldwide.

Wandsworth Sanctuary launch event - April 2021

We held our first (virtual) Wandsworth Sanctuary event in April 2021 with over 70 attendees, hosted by Putney MP and Wandsworth Welcomes Refugees co-founder, Fleur Anderson. This is the beginning of support for our local organisations, from libraries and cafes to theatres and schools, to help make Wandsworth a borough of Sanctuary.
